Transport Victoria Open Data Portal now available
21/11/2024
The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) has launched a new open data portal to create a one-stop-shop for transport open data - the Transport Victoria Open Data Portal.
The new portal was launched on 19 November 2024 to start consolidating DTP’s multiple open data platforms into one centralised hub. It has been designed to provide:
easy access to a wide range of accurate and consistent static and real-time public transport and road data on one platform
transport open datasets in the global standards and formats widely used by the open data community.
ability to download and use all transport open datasets for free.
The following APIs are also listed in the new portal:
Disruptions – Road
Freeway travel time
GTFS-R Trip Updates, Service Alerts and Vehicle Positions – Metro Trains and Buses and Yarra Trams
Please note: the APIs are listed in the new portal but data users will need to continue accessing them through this platform until further notice.
More APIs from this platform will be moved into the new portal throughout 2025 and it will be closed once they have been moved across. Further details about when each APIs will be moved to the new portal will be provided as they are confirmed.
For more information about the new open data portal, please visit the Transport Victoria website.

Following the Metro Trains GTFS-R real-time data releases in December for trip updates and vehicle positions, the Department of Transport has published the service alerts today.
Service alerts allow you to provide updates whenever there is disruption on the network. Delays are delivered via Trip Updates, whereas cancellations are published via Service Alerts. For initial release of Service Alerts, only cancellations will be published.
Planned Disruptions - Road API
15/12/2021
As of today, the Department of Transport has published the Planned Disruptions - Road API. This dataset contains the locations and details of planned disruptions in near real-time on roads managed by the Victorian DOT. The data includes (where available) the location of the disruption, road name, type of works being undertaken, which travel direction it affects, what time of the day works will be undertaken, how many lanes may be affected, how long the delay may be and other supporting information. In accordance with the Road Management Act, the Department of Transport is the coordinating road authority for all the arterial roads and freeways that are not privately owned in Victoria. For any works on, or that may affect, the road network, the Department of Transport must manage the disruption in order to protect the community and help people continue on their journey - The Data Exchange Team
